Tekenmachine

Op de ‘tekenmachine’ tekent een van de meisjes van de school uit de buurt haar, persoonlijke plattegrond van het landschap. Ze wijst en zegt: ‘Daar zit de beer maar ik kan m niet tekenen want anders eet hij de geiten op’.

De ‘tekenmachine’ is een constructie als een werkbank. Erop liggen vrijwel blanco plattegronden, daarover trek je een rol transparant papier. Deelnemers vertellen over hun kennis en ervaringen in het gebied, wijzen aan en tekenen persoonlijke kaarten.

De jager, Anatoli, tekent zijn vallei. Hij tekent zijn route vanaf de monding van de rivier via de bron dieper de vallei in. Hij noemt positieve, negatieve, heilige en magnetische plekken. Hij zet punten en lijnen maar omcirkelt de ‘places of power’, de plekken waar je niet komt, plekken waar je respect voor hebt, die alleen voor de dieren, planten en geesten zijn. Hoe hij dat tekent is voor mij een belangrijk beeld. In mijn aantekeningen cirkel ik vervolgens om die plekken heen. Zo ontstaan witte plekken in m’n notities en vormen zich mijn eerste kaarten in gedachten. Die had ik nooit kunnen voorstellen zonder dat ik Anatoli op die manier had zien vertellen, wijzen en tekenen tegelijk.

Ritual Spaces (annex)

Karakol is considered to be the spiritual heart of the Altai by the Altai, and it is seen as the centre of the world. As such it is an important place for the whole earth. It is believed that the mountains here, make the connection between the earth and the universe. If the energy level in the valley is good, then the earth will profit from that too. Nature nourishes all living beings. Everything is alive. The landscape is as the human body, it has organs and the forests are the brains.

There are many places of power in the Karakol valley, archeological places, mountains, rivers and springs. Mountain-territories belong to animals, plants and spirits, these are places where you don’t go, neither to visit nor to hunt. They are alive places, you don’t mark them on a map, you respect them. Knowledge about these places is transmitted orally. The Altai don’t want to note down these sacred places precisely, but pictured them in zones. Every family or clan has a sacred place. These places are very important but you do not talk about their location or its meaning.
