Uit: Wildwood, a journey through trees van Roger Deakin, 2007

In het Nederlands refereren talloze woorden aan grond: gegrond, grondvest, grondlegger, grondeloosheid, achtergrond, afgrond, doorgronden,  aarden, grondtoon, grondslag, afgrond, grondbeginsel, hartgrondig.

Map 1. – Ground

The ground on which a person is born is holy ground. Earth and ground relate not only to the place of birth but also to the place for burying the dead, as happened in the past in the kurgans – sacred burial mounds where the ancestors are buried.

It’s impossible to dig in frozen ground so that’s why burial mounds are made. The surrounding ‘yurt’ provides protection against wolves that might dig up the bones. The metal birds show that the dead person was a hunter. Birds represent freedom and dreams.

Ground is a metaphor for the continuity of life. So that’s why there are many expressions referring with respect to the ground: “The land teaches us lessons”; “Everything dies, but the landscape remains”; “The land is not yours, you borrow it from your children”; “The land is older than we are, take good care of it.” The people live from the land. “The earth is good, it is the source of everything.” It forms the basis for well-fed cattle that in turn provide milk, cheese, butter and meat. In Kyrgyzstan the ground can be put to use for only four to five months a year. The rest of the time the soil is frozen.

Kyrgyzstan has extensive mineral wealth. In addition to gold, beryllium (Be), dysprosium (Dy), plutonium (Pu) and uranium (U) can also be found; these are all materials needed in modern technological industry. Ulan’s father and grandfather worked in the uranium mines during the Soviet period. That was a hard life. His grandfather died as young as 35 years. “Now you’re not allowed to enter that region any longer. They say that the dust is still floating around there”.

Kyrgyzstan is also rich in H2O. The sources for all the water in the region can be found here. “Rivers and streams are the veins of the earth.”

Areas of communal land are ‘of everyone and for everyone’. Already we see this principle is disappearing very quickly. It is increasingly common to see pieces of land being enclosed and no longer being accessible to the public. This happens both in the city as well as elsewhere. The Chinese buy everything that is for sale and Canadians have taken over ownership of the gold mines and are buying up the walnut forests. These forests are located in the western part of Kyrgyzstan, in the Fergana valley. This valley acts as a gigantic sponge absorbing all the rain. Without the tree roots in the forests to secure the soil and to absorb the water, the incidence of landslides, mudflows and flooding will increase. This would change the climate of the whole valley. In the Dutch language innumerable words refer to ground: gegrond (grounded), grondvest (foundation), grondlegger (founder), grondeloosheid (boundlessness), achtergrond (background), doorgronden (to get to the bottom), aarden (to root), grondtoon (fundamental), grondslag(groundwork), grondbeginsel (fundamental principle), hartgrondig (from the bottom of one’s heart).
